Can You Dispute Credit Report Errors Yourself? Yes, Here's How
Updated: Oct 8
Errors on credit reports are more common than most people think, and they can cost you approvals and better interest rates. The good news: you have the legal right to dispute them yourself, for free. Here's how.
Step 1: Get all three reports
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion each keep their own report, and they don't always match. Get all three for free at AnnualCreditReport.com, the official site. Checking your own reports never hurts your score.
Step 2: Look for errors
Go line by line. Common errors include accounts that aren't yours, payments marked late that you paid on time, the same debt listed twice, wrong balances or credit limits, closed accounts shown as open, and negative items older than the reporting period, which is generally seven years for most negative information.
Step 3: File the dispute
You can dispute online, by mail, or by phone with each bureau that shows the error. Be specific: identify the account, explain exactly what's wrong, and include copies (never originals) of supporting documents like bank statements or payment confirmations. If you dispute by mail, consider certified mail so you have proof of delivery.
You can also dispute directly with the company that reported the information, such as your lender or the collection agency.
Step 4: Watch for the results
Credit bureaus generally have 30 days to investigate a dispute, and sometimes up to 45 in certain situations. They must send you the results in writing. If the information can't be verified, it must be corrected or removed.
What disputes can't do
Disputes are for information that's inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable. Accurate, timely information can't be legally removed just because it's negative, and filing false disputes can backfire. If an item is accurate, the better path is building positive history around it.
When to get help
Doing it yourself is completely valid. People often work with a credit consultant when they have several errors across multiple reports, a deadline like a mortgage application, or simply want someone to organize the process and track every response.
