Credit Utilization: The Fastest Way to Move Your Credit Score
Updated: Oct 8
If you want to see your credit score move quickly, credit utilization is usually the place to start. Here's what it is, why it matters, and simple ways to lower it.
What is credit utilization?
Credit utilization is the percentage of your available revolving credit that you're using. If you have a $1,000 credit limit and a $300 balance, your utilization on that card is 30%.
Scoring models look at your utilization on each card and across all your cards combined. In the FICO model, amounts owed, which is driven largely by utilization, make up about 30% of your score.
What's a good utilization rate?
A common guideline is to keep utilization under 30%. People with the highest scores often keep it under 10%. Lower is generally better, though having a small balance report is fine.
The statement date trick
Most card issuers report your balance to the credit bureaus around your statement closing date, not your payment due date. That means you can pay in full every month and still show high utilization if your balance is high when the statement closes.
The fix: make a payment a few days before your statement closing date. You can find that date on your statement or in your card's app.
Other ways to lower utilization
Pay balances down, starting with cards closest to their limits. Spread balances across cards rather than maxing one out. Ask for a credit limit increase on cards in good standing, but ask the issuer first whether it will cause a hard inquiry. And think twice before closing old cards, since closing one reduces your total available credit.
Why utilization moves fast
Unlike late payments, utilization has no long memory in most scoring models. Once a lower balance reports, your score can reflect it within a billing cycle or two. That makes it one of the most effective levers if you're preparing to apply for a mortgage or auto loan.
