How Long Do Late Payments Stay on Your Credit Report?
Updated: Oct 8
A single late payment can feel like it follows you forever. The good news: it doesn't. Here's how long late payments stay on your credit report, how much they matter over time, and what you can do about them.
The short answer: up to 7 years
Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, a late payment can stay on your credit report for up to seven years from the date of the original delinquency. After that, it must come off your report.
Payments are generally reported as late once they're 30 or more days past due. If you pay a few days after the due date but before 30 days, it usually won't show up on your credit report at all, though your lender may still charge a late fee.
The impact fades long before 7 years
A late payment hurts most when it's new. As it gets older, and as you add more on-time payments after it, its effect on your score shrinks. A two-year-old late payment surrounded by on-time history weighs far less than one from last month.
Payment history is the single biggest factor in a FICO score, about 35%, which is why building a fresh streak of on-time payments matters so much.
What you can do about late payments
1. Check that it's accurate. Pull your reports for free at AnnualCreditReport.com and confirm the dates, amounts, and account details. If something is wrong, such as a payment marked late that you paid on time or an account that isn't yours, you have the right to dispute it with the credit bureau.
2. Ask for a goodwill adjustment. If the late payment is accurate but you have an otherwise strong history with that lender, you can write a polite letter asking them to remove it as a courtesy. Lenders don't have to agree, but some do.
3. Prevent the next one. Set up autopay for at least the minimum payment on every account, and add calendar reminders a few days before each due date.
What no one can do
Accurate, timely information can't be legally removed from your credit report just because it's negative. Be cautious of any company that promises to erase accurate late payments. What you can do is make sure your report is correct and build positive history going forward.
